How We Work
You can expect a mixture of support, hand-holding, and tough love from me, but I can’t do the work for you. You need to be ready to make a commitment to yourself.
I don’t allow the word “hate” or “confused.” Words have power!
Getting Started
During your free consultation we can determine if we are a good match to work together.
Then I always suggest we do an initial session before committing to a discounted package of sessions (the initial session can be merged into the package).
Usually within two sessions I can determine where you are with respect to the exam content, whether your target score for admission to your preferred program is realistic, what you need to do to achieve your goal score, the time you’ll need to put in, the proper areas of study, etcetera.
A Typical Session
An ideal session is 90 – 120 minutes. We greet and “check in”. I always ask if you have any questions from your work since our last session so you don’t get stuck. And also if you know what you want to work on today — most of the time students will know this from their previous work. We might look at sample problems, explore strategies, or do some topic drills.
Materials & Venues
The right materials are VERY important. We want materials that closely resemble the types of problems you can expect to encounter on the exam. We also need drill and teaching materials to address topics that need extra attention. Be careful about made-up practices tests created by individuals; they do not always test the same skills the official material does.
We use an online whiteboard and video chat to meet. I prefer Skype if possible. Zoom is also an option. If you are in the Toledo, OH or Southern Michigan area we may be able to meet in-person.
Frequency and Total Number of Sessions
One or two 1.5-hour sessions a week are common, but it depends upon the individual.
The total number of sessions you’ll need will depend upon your starting point, your goals, and the time you can put into self-study. I have had some students who see the improvement they need in as little as four sessions; others may need months.
Work Between Sessions
For tutoring to work best, it is critical that you make a time commitment to working on your skills. I am a bit strict about candidates doing what they tell me they are going to do. You will improve if you put in the time with proper direction.
